OB3 River Niger Crossing: How HDD Helped Complete a Major Gas Pipeline Connection
How HDD Helped Complete a Major Gas Pipeline Connection
Nigeria has significant natural gas resources, particularly in the eastern part of the country. But producing gas is only part of the equation. The country also needs the infrastructure to move that gas to power facilities, industries and communities across other regions.
The Obiafu–Obrikom–Oben Gas Pipeline, commonly known as the OB3 Gas Pipeline, was developed to strengthen that connection. The project comprises 48-inch and 36-inch trunk gas pipelines covering approximately 130 kilometres. It runs from Obiafu and Obrikom in Rivers State to the Oben node at Ijomi, Oghara, in Delta State.
By connecting Nigeria’s eastern gas pipeline network with major pipeline systems in the west and north, OB3 is intended to improve the movement of domestic gas across the country. One of the most difficult sections, however, lay beneath the River Niger.
Why the OB3 Pipeline Matters
Nigeria’s gas resources are not always located close to the industries and power facilities that need them. That makes pipeline connections particularly important.
The OB3 pipeline is designed to link the eastern gas network with the Escravos–Lagos Pipeline System in the west and provide onward connection towards the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano pipeline system in the north.
In practical terms, that creates more options for moving gas between different parts of the country. A stronger interconnected pipeline network can support electricity generation, manufacturing and other industries that depend on reliable energy supply.
But for that network to function as intended, each major section of the route has to be completed. The River Niger crossing was one of those sections.
The Challenge Beneath the River Niger
The OB3 pipeline needed to cross the River Niger between Ndoni in Rivers State and Aboh in Delta State. This was not a conventional pipeline installation. The crossing required a 48-inch pipeline to travel approximately 2,000 metres underground, reaching a depth of about 52 metres beneath the river.
At that scale, opening the riverbed for conventional excavation would present major construction challenges. Instead, Horizontal Directional Drilling, or HDD, was used to create an underground route beneath the river.
HDD reduces the need to disturb the surface directly above the pipeline route. But long-distance river crossings of this size still demand careful planning, specialised equipment and an approach suited to the ground conditions.
Previous specialist attempts had not completed the crossing, leaving a critical gap in the wider OB3 route. PCE Nigeria was subsequently appointed to execute the crossing package.
PCE Nigeria’s Role in the OB3 Crossing
We began work on the OB3 River Niger crossing on 6 October 2025. The project built on the company’s earlier experience completing the AKK River Niger crossing.
For OB3, the scale was even larger. The crossing involved a 48-inch pipeline over an underground distance of approximately two kilometres. PCE Nigeria used dual-rig intersecting technology, with drilling activity taking place from opposite sides of the crossing.
Both rigs were also operated simultaneously during the reaming stages, when the underground bore was enlarged to create sufficient space for the pipeline. A specially developed drilling-fluid system was used to support the bore and help manage changing ground conditions along the route.
The important point is not simply the equipment that was used. It is that the drilling method, equipment and fluid system had to work together as one solution for the conditions beneath the River Niger.
Why Drilling Fluid Matters on a Crossing Like OB3
Drilling fluid can sound like a small part of a large infrastructure project, but during HDD it plays an important role. As drilling progresses, the fluid helps carry drilled material out of the bore, supports the underground opening and helps maintain suitable drilling conditions.
That becomes increasingly important on a long crossing. Ground conditions can change along the underground route, and the drilling system must continue to perform while maintaining a bore large and stable enough for the final pipeline installation.
For OB3, PCE Nigeria used a specially developed drilling-fluid formula suited to the demands of the crossing.
This illustrates an important principle of HDD: difficult crossings are rarely solved by one piece of equipment alone. Successful execution depends on matching the drilling method, fluid system, equipment and field operations to the conditions of the project.
Completing the OB3 River Niger Crossing
PCE Nigeria completed the OB3 River Niger crossing on 28 April 2026.
The completed crossing installed the 48-inch pipeline beneath approximately two kilometres of the River Niger route.
For the wider OB3 project, this meant more than completing a difficult piece of drilling work.
The River Niger crossing had been one of the major outstanding sections affecting the connection and commissioning of the approximately 130-kilometre pipeline.
Completing it removed a significant obstacle to bringing the wider gas infrastructure together.
Why the Completed Crossing Matters for Nigeria
That was the importance of the OB3 River Niger crossing.
The pipeline is intended to improve the movement of gas between Nigeria’s eastern, western and northern pipeline networks. Better connections between those systems can help make domestic gas available to more power plants, manufacturers and industrial facilities.
For Nigeria, that has wider economic significance.
Reliable energy infrastructure supports existing businesses, helps industries plan for growth and can make new investment more practical in areas connected to the network.
The value of the OB3 crossing therefore extends beyond the 2,000 metres beneath the River Niger.
It helped close a physical gap i
What OB3 Demonstrates About HDD in Nigeria
The OB3 project provides another example of how Horizontal Directional Drilling can support major infrastructure development in Nigeria.
Pipeline routes do not exist on empty maps. They encounter rivers, roads, communities, wetlands and changing ground conditions.
In some locations, conventional excavation remains the most practical construction method.
In others, HDD provides a way to install infrastructure beneath an obstacle while reducing disturbance at the surface.
The OB3 crossing also demonstrates the importance of experience.
Long-distance, large-diameter HDD requires more than equipment capacity. It requires the ability to assess the crossing, plan the drilling approach, manage changing conditions and coordinate the entire operation from entry point to final pipeline installation.
From AKK to OB3
PCE Nigeria’s involvement in OB3 followed its work on the AKK River Niger crossing, where the company completed a 1,565-metre HDD installation for a 40-inch gas pipeline.
The OB3 project extended that experience to an approximately 2,000-metre crossing involving a larger, 48-inch pipeline.
Together, the two projects provide practical examples of large-scale HDD execution in Nigeria.
They also show how knowledge gained from one complex crossing can contribute to the delivery of another.
For PCE Nigeria, that experience forms part of a wider approach combining Nigeria-based execution with international HDD knowledge and engineering experience.
That balance is important.
The technology may be used internationally, but every crossing is shaped by the conditions on the ground: local geology, project logistics, available infrastructure and the requirements of the pipeline itself.
Building Infrastructure One Critical Connection at a Time
Nigeria’s future gas infrastructure will depend not only on building more pipelines, but also on completing the difficult connections that allow those pipelines to function as integrated networks.
The OB3 River Niger crossing is one example.
Its completion helped remove a major obstacle from a pipeline designed to strengthen the movement of gas between different parts of Nigeria.
It also demonstrated that large-diameter, long-distance HDD crossings can be executed in Nigeria when the engineering approach, equipment and field experience are brought together effectively.
For PCE Nigeria, the project adds to a growing body of experience in delivering complex pipeline crossings and supporting the infrastructure needed to move energy where it is required.
One difficult crossing completed can help an entire network move forward.
