Learn how PCE Nigeria utilizes Buried Pipeline Detection System (BPDS) technology to accurately locate and map deeply buried steel pipelines up to 100 metres underground, ensuring safe crossing design and risk-free HDD installations.

Addressing Underground Pipeline Detection Challenges

Underground pipelines play an important role in transporting natural gas, oil and other essential resources across Nigeria. Many of these pipelines pass beneath roads, rivers, industrial facilities and developed areas, where they may be difficult to locate without specialised surveying equipment.

For engineers planning new pipeline installations or working near existing infrastructure, knowing the exact position of a buried pipeline is essential. Inaccurate information about its location or depth can complicate route planning, increase construction risks and potentially lead to damage during excavation or drilling.

These challenges become more significant when pipelines are buried deep underground, beyond the effective range of some conventional detection methods.

To address this, PCE Nigeria offers Buried Pipeline Detection System (BPDS) technology, designed to locate deeply buried steel pipelines and provide information about their underground position and depth.

The technology supports pipeline surveying, construction planning and engineering activities where reliable information about existing underground infrastructure is required.

What Is a Buried Pipeline Detection System (BPDS)?

A Buried Pipeline Detection System (BPDS) is a specialised surveying technology used to identify the location and depth of underground steel pipelines.

Conventional pipeline detection equipment can become less effective as burial depth increases, particularly in areas with complex underground conditions or limited access. BPDS provides an alternative method for locating deeply buried steel pipelines without excavating along the entire pipeline route.

PCE Nigeria's BPDS technology supports three-dimensional positioning, helping engineers determine both the horizontal alignment and depth of an existing pipeline.

This information is particularly useful when planning new infrastructure near existing pipelines, verifying pipeline routes or investigating installations where original construction records may be incomplete.

How Does BPDS Technology Work?

The BPDS technology offered by PCE Nigeria uses electromagnetic field principles to detect buried steel pipelines.

The system works by introducing a low-frequency signal into an existing pipeline through suitable connection points. Specialised sensors then detect the electromagnetic field associated with the pipeline, and the collected measurements are processed to determine its underground position and depth.

The system uses extremely low-frequency signals, typically within the 2–3 Hz range, and is designed to detect buried steel pipelines at depths ranging from approximately 2 metres to more than 100 metres, depending on operating conditions.

Its technical specifications also indicate positioning accuracy within approximately ±1–2% of the distance between the measuring instrument and the pipeline under suitable conditions.

Actual results depend on pipeline characteristics, site conditions, electromagnetic interference and the survey method used.

Why Is Deep Underground Pipeline Detection Important?

Not all underground pipelines are installed at shallow depths. Some pipelines pass beneath major rivers, highways, developed communities and other challenging locations, where they may be buried tens of metres below the surface.

In these environments, locating an existing pipeline can be difficult, particularly when installation records are incomplete or the surrounding infrastructure has changed.

Planning New Pipeline Routes

When a new pipeline is planned near an existing installation, engineers must understand the position and depth of the buried infrastructure. This helps them assess potential conflicts, determine suitable crossing alignments and establish appropriate separation between pipelines.

Reducing Construction Risks

Excavation or underground drilling near an unidentified pipeline can create serious safety and construction risks. Pipeline detection surveys provide information that helps project teams plan construction activities and identify where additional verification or protective measures may be necessary.

Supporting Pipeline Maintenance

Existing pipelines may require location surveys during maintenance planning, infrastructure assessments or engineering investigations. BPDS can help establish the position of deeply buried steel pipelines where direct access is difficult.

Working in Challenging Environments

River crossings, developed areas and major infrastructure corridors can make conventional underground detection more difficult. Specialist surveying methods such as BPDS provide additional options for assessing pipeline locations in these environments.

How BPDS Supports Horizontal Directional Drilling Projects

Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) is a trenchless construction method used to install pipelines beneath rivers, roads, railway lines and other obstacles without excavating an open trench across the entire crossing route.

Before an HDD project begins, engineers must design an underground bore path that accounts for geological conditions, pipeline diameter, installation depth and existing infrastructure. Where buried steel pipelines are located near the proposed route, their position must be carefully assessed.

BPDS can support this planning process by providing information about the horizontal location and depth of existing pipelines. Engineers can use the survey results to identify potential conflicts, evaluate the separation between existing and proposed infrastructure and refine the planned bore alignment.

For long-distance river crossings, this information can be particularly valuable because existing pipelines may be buried at depths that are difficult to investigate using conventional methods.

At PCE Nigeria, BPDS forms part of the surveying and engineering capabilities available for underground pipeline construction. It provides additional location information that can support HDD planning alongside geotechnical investigations and other required utility surveys.

Where Can BPDS Be Used?

BPDS technology is suited to projects involving deeply buried steel pipelines where accurate underground positioning is required.

Potential applications include:

  • River crossings: Locating existing pipelines installed beneath riverbeds.
  • HDD construction: Identifying buried pipelines near proposed drilling alignments.
  • Parallel pipeline installations: Surveying existing pipelines before constructing new routes nearby.
  • Industrial areas: Supporting underground infrastructure investigations in developed locations.
  • Pipeline maintenance: Verifying pipeline positions before maintenance or engineering work.
  • Deep pipeline surveys: Locating steel pipelines at depths where conventional detection methods may be less effective.

The suitability of the technology depends on the pipeline material, site conditions and the availability of suitable signal connection points.

BPDS Technology in Practice

International applications of BPDS technology provide examples of how deeply buried steel pipelines can be located to support new construction and infrastructure planning.

Tanghe Reservoir Pipeline Survey, China

In May 2023, BPDS technology was used to survey an existing natural gas pipeline beneath the Tanghe Reservoir in Shanxi Province, China.

The pipeline was a 660 mm diameter steel gas pipeline installed through HDD at approximately 15 metres beneath the riverbed. A new pipeline was planned near the existing installation, making accurate location information important for crossing design.

BPDS was used to establish the existing pipeline's position, achieving a location error of no more than 1 metre. The survey provided the information needed to plan the new HDD crossing approximately 30 metres from the existing pipeline.

Shanghai Pipeline Survey, China

Another application took place in Shanghai between June and November 2022.

The project involved surveying existing steel pipelines with diameters of 12, 16 and 20 inches, buried at depths of approximately 15 to 50 metres.

The surveys supported plans for a new oil pipeline running near existing infrastructure across 56 HDD crossing locations.

The BPDS surveys covered all 56 HDD locations within six months, with horizontal positioning and depth errors generally below 30 centimetres. The survey results were subsequently used to support the construction of the new pipeline alongside existing infrastructure.

These applications illustrate how deep pipeline detection technology can support engineering projects where new pipeline routes must be planned around existing buried infrastructure.

What Should Engineers Consider Before a BPDS Survey?

Before selecting a pipeline detection method, engineers should evaluate the conditions and requirements of the project.

Important considerations include the pipeline material, expected burial depth, available access points, surrounding infrastructure and required survey accuracy.

Because BPDS is designed for steel pipeline detection, the material and characteristics of the existing pipeline must be confirmed. Engineers should also assess whether suitable signal connection points are available and whether nearby infrastructure may affect electromagnetic measurements.

The required survey accuracy should be established according to how the information will be used. Where a new pipeline will pass close to existing infrastructure, additional verification may be necessary before construction begins.

A properly planned survey should therefore consider the detection method alongside the engineering decisions that will depend on its results.

Buried Pipeline Detection and Pipeline Construction in Nigeria

As pipeline networks expand and existing infrastructure continues to operate, accurate information about underground pipeline locations becomes increasingly important.

New pipeline routes may need to cross or run alongside existing installations, while maintenance and infrastructure development can require work near buried assets.

For these projects, pipeline detection is part of the wider planning process. Survey information helps engineers understand the location of existing infrastructure before determining the construction method, alignment and protective measures required.

PCE Nigeria provides BPDS pipeline location surveying alongside specialist HDD engineering, pipeline construction and related technical services. These capabilities support the assessment of underground infrastructure where existing pipelines may affect new construction or maintenance activities.
